> I am diagnosed as BiPolar and I am currently up to 200 mg of lamictal and 300mg of wellbutrin. Before I started these two , I was on depakote 1000mg, seroquel, and wellbutrin... I had ran out of meds and at the time couldn't afford to go back to my doctor to get more meds. My cousin was taking adderall but her doctor switched her so she gave me the rest that she had... I know that you aren't suppose to just change meds like that but I was really starting to feel "weird". So I started taking the adderall.... I felt so good... I was able to finish things I started months ago... was able to focus much better. I wasn't scared to go out around people in a social enviroment. In short , I had never felt so good... So when I fianlly was able to make an appointment with my doctor, I told him that I wanted to switch to adderall... He looked at me like I was crazy... I am 34 years old.. He says that they only prescribe this med to kids and that it is habit forming... I was very disappointed. So first he tried me on stattera... That did not work for me... So then he switched me to the lam and well... I really don't feel like this is working for me either... I have no energy and I am gaining weight... Actually I am more depressed now then I have been in a long time... My doctor says there is no way he will ever prescribe the adderall to me... Should I try another pdoc or is it impossible for me to ever get back on the adderall... I think that it is a shame that the only med I felt ever worked for me is supposedly bad for me... I am very confused and frustrated... Any help is greatly appreciated.....
yes, try another pdoc. adderall's not bad for you unless you abuse it. do you think that you will abuse it if it is prescribed for you? do you have a history of abusing meds? did you take all of your cousin's supply in one hour? if so then you might have a problem and it could be bad for you.there are pdocs out there who won't think twice about prescribing a stimulant to an adult, and there are pdocs who wouldn't consider prescribing a stim to a child with the worst case of adhd in the world. they are all different, thou most are in the latter group.
oh, and you can just forget about a general practitioner prescribing one. They are only good for handing out SSRI's like candy and that's about it. in fact, some of them seem to be so ignorant they will tell you that the only drugs that exist for depression are SSRI's. When I first went to a GP for social anxiety, after trialing zoloft for a month, since it wasn't helping, I asked if there was anything else I could try besides a SSRI? Well, I was told "the only other meds for anxiety are antipsychotics, and you don't want to go on one of those." talk about confusion..
You see, there seems to be an epidemic going around in the medical community, the symptoms seem to involve a bad case of amnesia which has caused many doctors to forget that the number one meds prescribed for anxiety, benzodiazepines, don't even exist anymore! staggering isn't it? I think there may be a similar epidemic going around involving stimulants.. you best be on the look out!
