Antipsychotics to treat elderly pain med delerium

Posted by kotsunega on December 22, 2003, at 22:22:41

My 82 year old mother in law is in the hospital with diskitis. She's being treated for related pain and, even though different pain meds have been tried (morphine, demerol, oxycontin, etc.) she is still experiencing a pain med induced psychosis. She is really off the wall agitated and delerious. Since she's likely to be on the pain meds for some time, and will be transferred to a nursing care facility soon, does anyone know if prescribing a low dose atypical antipsychotic would help her meds induced agitated delerium? I take zyprexa for bipolar mania and I can really appreciate what it has done for me. I was just wondering if something like that would help my mother in law. Anybody know? Thanks!
