I do think they are fine every now and then for insomnia, just not on an ongoing basis. My ENT prescribed Lorazepam (aka Ativan) for me 2 years ago after I had sinus surgery "just in case" I was uncomfortable. (The sinus packing freaks many people out.) Over the last 2 years I've used up about half of the 30 he gave me, but only on those nights that I just couldn't turn my brain off or I felt intensely aggravated or worried. They sure did help me calm down and pleasantly fall asleep. I would not advise anyone taking them every night unless they absolutely had to because they really are a fine, fine drug and one can get happily hooked on them. But, then again, I am not a medical professional yadda yadda yadda. I've hoarded mine because it's very hard to find a PCP who is willing to prescribe them (or Xanax) due to their addictive tendency.
