Listen, i'm not personally very conservative when it comes to mixing drugs, but doing ecstacy when on an MAOI is just freaking *dangerous*. Extremely dangerous. In the study from the abtract you provided, they just gave rats deprenyl 30 minutes before the MDMA. So 1., the degree of MAO inhibition probably could not have been as high as someone who has been on an MAOI for weeks or longer. And secondly, deprenyl is mostly just an inhibitor of MAO-B, so it does not cause much increase in serotonin activity-- and none if in small doses (i'm not really sure whether 2mg/kg is a large dose or not, but still).
For someone on an MAOI-- especially Nardil or Parnate-- to do MDMA/ecstacy, i believe there would be some risk of a hypertensive crisis, and there would be a seriously extreme risk of developing bad serotonin syndrome-- both of which can be fatal and cause brain damage.
Also, in regard to deprenyl with MDMA and brain damage, i'm not sure but it seems like lilJim was right about what he said too: "still sounds to me like the maoi decreases some bad things from the x 'treatment' of the rats ... only to contribute to some really bad things in that last sentence there"
