Help! This is a long-ish post.
I started taking the MAOI, Nardil 11 days ago and I am getting some strange side effects. I might say that I used to take the Reversible MAOI moclobemide (900mg daily) and I had no problems with any side effects except that if stopped working after a few months.
I took 30mg a day Nardil for the first week and then 45mg a day for the last three days. Soon after taking 15mg Nardil in the late morning I start to get side effects. I have noticed the following:
(1) I find that I get brief fleeting episodes of feeling "light headed" or maybe I should describe it as feeling a bit "dizzy" or "giddy". The best way to describe it may be to say I am a bit "faint". I get sort of "micro blackouts".
(2) I feel a bit more clumsy than normal. It's as if my balance is slightly but noticeably worse than usual.
(3) Also things seem a little confused and I feel distinctly less able to think very clearly.
It all seems like when I in the past I haven't eaten for most of the day and might feel "weak" at times. I think this is low blood sugar? But I don't think low blood sugar would make me slightly confused or slightly clumsy.
My blood pressure has gone down from about 138/88 to about 125/82 so that does not seem to be the problem.
What is happening to me? The effects I describe are not strong but I can not put up with these effects for months! My symptoms kind of remind me of elderly people (I am 48 and generally healthy and fit) who get confused or are unsteady or who can not co-ordinate their movements well.
Can anyone guess as to what is happening here? It seems almost a bit like the confusion one gets on tricyclics - which I think is due to acetlycholine.
Unlike the tricyclics my vision does not actually *seem* blurred but it is hard to tell. I have no dry mouth or any of the muscarinic effects one might get from tricyclics.
Can someone tell me if all this is normal when starting Nardil?
And can anyone tell me if it will it pass?
And does anyone know if it is likely I will get similar side effects on Parnate (tranylcypromin) or isocarboxazid.
