It happens to me all the time. I suffer from GAD, have been diagnosed with very, very mild sleep apnea. For me, I think it's a combination of choking and panic. It's really quite annoying and no doctor I have been to has a good idea of how to treat it. A lot of shrugged shoulders and "just try sleeping on your side." I think it also has to do with my crappy lowered neurotransmitter levels, because I don't have the panic/chocking when I take any of the SSRI meds.
