Your situation sounds like mine. First I went through very stressful events with family, then more life changes, insomnia, counseling which brought lots of unresolved issues to the surface, my dad died, my mom died and the empty nest came. Different ad's had intolerable side effects, some worked but induced apathy. Everytime I tried to stop I had discontinuation problems and then I didn't know if I was still depressed or just suffering from withdrawal. I'm rambling. To make a long story short--I thought ad's were the answer but had to take a benzo to counteract the se of ad. In March I got stuck in a blizzard for 3 days with no meds. I decided to give going without a try. I'm glad I did. I feel much more alive without Lex. I still take Klonopin and keep it at a steady state. I found that with benzos (I started with Xanax) I do much better if there is a steady amount in my system. For me that is .50/mg day. Never more (except for when I was on Lex and when I tried Wellbutrin.) Especially when I tried Wellbutrin I needed to up the dose of Klonopin because of anxiety.
