The very last thing on my mind as I reacted to the threat to her wellbeing was what others would think of me for acting to potentially prevent a tragedy. A misguided sense of loyalty could cost someone their life. Can you think of a worse kind of betrayal than that? What is the only legal reason a health-care professional can break a patient's absolute right to privacy? Whether a sense of betrayal is appropriate or not following such a breach of confidence, I can assure you that you will get over the sense of betrayal. But the alternative?
