The morning-bad-evening-better diurnal rhythm is considered practically diagnostic of melancholic depression. In my major depressive episodes (with severe anxiety) the effect is so pronounced that in the morning I'm practically incapicitated and by 8 in the evening I feel practically normal. There is a belief, I don't know how well supported by research, that TCAs are better for melancholic depressions than SSRIs or MAOIs. I've used imipramine for the last 20 years with mostly success. My trials with SSRIs have never worked.
Feel Better,
Britt
