> KristenAbsolutely! It's much better to eat fish than to take fish oil capsules. Whole fish contain nutrients that are lacking in fish oil capsules. They're high in taurine, a good source of DMAE, and supply selenium (there aren't many good sources of selenium). It also seems to emerging that fish protein has beneficial effects when compared to other protein sources (e.g. soy), even when adjusted for specific amino acid content. Fish protein gives reduced post-prandial (after meal) triglycerides and glucose levels compared to other proteins.
You'd need to eat about 200 grams of salmon to give the equivalent amount of EPA that is often recommended (about 1 gram).
But, there's another beneficial effect of eating whole fish vs. using fish oil capsules. Whole fish will generally substitute for some other food, e.g. meat. That other food will be high in long-chain omega-6 fatty acids, so you're also helping to balance your omega-6:omega-3 intake ratio when you eat whole fish. Capsules would generally just be taken with a meal.
