Hello Jessica:
How I wish I could be taking Parnate right now!! But I'm living in a foreign country where it is unavailable, and going through bad depression (relapse) without it is a killer (I'm presently hoping that Aurorix, another AD closely related to the MAO class will help me). Now, as for your problem--I don't know anything about Depakote, so I don't know if that would be contradicated or not. There are many potential serious drug interactions with the MAO drugs, so you have to be careful.
But what I can say is that I took Parnate successfully for more than 18 years. I considered it a life saver, and if the Aurorix doesn't work out for me now, I will pick up a large supply of Parnate when I return to the U.S. for a visit in the spring.
Side effects I experienced with Parnate were these:
1) Dry mouth
2) Sometimes low blood pressure which resulted in mild light headedness
3) Increased craving for carbohydrates and sweets leading to some weight gain.
4) NO sexual dysfunction
5) The OPPOSITE of fatigue--I actually enjoyed what you'd call a reduced need for sleep. I could get by on as little as 5 hours of sleep per night. Great for night owls. (I'm 53 now so perhaps that has changed). But Parnate never made me feel tired.I had to make sacrifices in diet (e.g. cheese) and tell the dentist "No epinephrine!" whenever he gave me a pain injection, but so what? I got my life back and I'd recommend this medication any day.
Keep in mind the rule: everyone reacts to every medication differently. So some people don't do so well on Parnate.
In any case, good luck to you and I hope that this med proves to be your solution.
