I think some omega-3 (fish oil) treatment and vigorous exercise would help "repair" some of the lingering effect of the medication withdrawl. I do not think your brain is permanently damaged - the brain is quite dynamic actually, but it takes time for new cells to grow & respond to the changes in chemistry.
as for the future, i can appreciate fear of medication, heck it frightens me 1/2 to death. but the thing that really scares me shitless is a life of twisted thoughts, becoming a human ghost, killing myself.
i try to think selfishly: how come all these other people got the "good" neurological genes and don't have to suffer? in this light, i am happy to have the prosthetic of modern medications. sure, like a peg leg, it isn't as good as the real thing, but they are getting better all the time.
besides the meds from the doctor, i really recommend doing something proactive on your own, like exercise & looking at dietary stuff. be your best friend here, advocate for your wellness, do what you need to do *before* you wind up in a crisis. also consider that when you're all messed up, it's hard on relationships, family, co-workers, etc. we exist in a social matrix that sometimes feels crushing. yet when i'm doing well, i'm often amazed at what i find in this matrix, how i'm seen by others who have consistent moods, how much they actually care even though i've been lost on the seas of neurological solipsism and can't see them.
medication is not the enemy, just one of the many ways you can - and probably should - take care of yourself. and being well is when it's finally possible to be of use to other people, that is, to be fully human.
