Help!-Compromised Liver Needs AD

Posted by mdertinger on February 23, 2002, at 10:07:19

I am requested any information about antidepressants that do not stress the liver. Are there any!!!

My dad had 80% of his liver removed 5 yrs ago because of some weird cyst that grew on it because of a Meditararian parasite he contracted some time in his days in Italy as a boy, or on a trip back 20 yrs ago. Too weird, but in any case, his liver did grow back, but the bile ducts do not drain properly into his intestines. He needs a drainage tube permanently outside his body to push the bile to his intestines. It worked ok for a couple of years, but now it gets blocked all the time. He is permanently yellow from jaundice, has an ulcer, and feels like total crap. After watching him suffer for the last year, I truely think he has become severely depressed. I'm no pdoc, but I've been on Prozac for 7 years and am suicidal without it. He is very much like me (worrier, thinker) Even he is finally admitting his contant stomach aches may be related to depression. (He is only 64 yrs old and otherwise active, non drinker or smoker)

I've considered taking to his doctor about an AD, but I know the doc will say NO if it will cause any stress to the liver.

I also considered Xanex, because maybe he's walking around with cronic anxiety because he feels like he's going to die any day. He also doesn't sleep at night, because he says his mind "never shuts" off. Again, I think this may be another symptom of depression/anxiety.

The only way I could get him to see a pdoc is to know that there are AD's that don't effect the liver.

Again, any suggestions on meds that might help depression and/or anxiety, but do NOT impact the liver?
Thanks!
