How old are you? I don't know if your age makes any difference, but the younger you are the more insistent I've found that medical (including pyshcs) are on making descisions.
For myself finding a team of doctors that listens to me and that I trust their judgement has made a real difference. Are you comfortable with your gp? Go back to him and explain your feelings about your pysh re meds etc.
