Doesn't she believe you when you tell her? She can look it up in the Physician's Desk Reference, the big book of drugs that every doctor has. It's legal. Ask why she thinks it's illegal.

That's a start. Don't expect anything obvious immediately; you're at a starting dose, and it takes several hours for it to start working.

The maximum recommended dose is 400 mg/day (I think this is usually taken every 4-6 hours). I think limiting it to 50 mg twice a day is unreasonable, but I hope it helps you.
I'd avoid methadone because of the possibility that it would stop working in the long run and leave you in worse shape than you are already. That possibility exists with all these drugs, but I think it's greater with methadone.
