First post (and a little long). Hello from Bombay (India). Decided recently to go back on ADs again. Dysthymia, with depressive episodes every now and then (getting more frequent). I've been on Prozac twice before, responded OK, but can't handle the sexual side-effects anymore. (Also worried that third-time round it won't be as effective. Is this generally true? Or do you simply try it again and see?) Last depressive episode, stayed off drugs because of side-effects -- Zoloft, almost impotent, Wellbutrin SR, insomnia and weight loss (and I'm very underweight to begin with). Remeron would seem to be the ideal choice for me (because of the likelihood of weight gain, and presumably not causing sexual dysfunction) -- but when I took 7.5 mg many months ago, I was debilitatingly groggy for much of the next day. (I'm pretty sensitive to anti-histamines, in fact used to take Benadryl to go to sleep.) I know that taking the drug in higher doses reduces the oversedation in some (most?) people. My questions are: Can one start on a high dose, say 30 mg right away (instead of increasing up from 7.5)? Is this, or Remeron in general, advisable for me given my sensitivity to antihistamines? (I'm scared of falling asleep and not waking up for 48 hours.) And is combining with another drug advisable -- perhaps Wellbutrin? More generally, do side effects tend to "cancel" each other out (the insomnia-inducing and weight-loss-causing properties of Wellbutrin counteracting the weight-gain-causing and sedating properties of Remeron)? I should confess that I'm a little recalcitrant about putting "too many" medicines in my body; also that since I'm feeling a lot better recently (I'm also in therapy -- long-term psychoanalysis) I'm now questioning whether I should takes meds at all.
At any rate, apologies for the length of this post (the style seems to for very short posts here); like to hear your responses.
