They're completely different drugs. But anyway, it's hard to predict what will help any particular person with mood swings. Some people are helped by antipsychotics (like Zyprexa), some are helped by anticonvulsants (like Trileptal), some need a different class of drug altogether (antidepressants, for example). Also, some people may respond to one drug of a particular class but not to a different drug of the same class -- for example, even if Trileptal turns out not to be the right thing for you, Depakote (another anticonvulsant) might work.

BTW: I take the same dose of Trileptal as you are on (300 mg/day), and I gather that this is a pretty low dose. (I'm taking it to prevent possible seizures, and since I only had a couple of the episodes in a year, my doctor figured I probably could get by on a low dose.) 5 mg/day of Zyprexa is also a low dose, although if your friend's problem is mood swings too, she shouldn't need as high a dose as a person taking it for schizophrenia would.
