In reply to JOHNL (others): 'HANGOVER' effect w/ Zyprexa?, posted by Janelle on September 2, 2001, at 17:32:41
Hi there Janelle,
I have noticed the exact same feelings you describe. As of yet the only thing that helps with the hangover effect is coffee. I have coffee immediately when I get up. The hangover feeling is gone by the time I start my second coffee. The worst time though is while I'm making the coffee and waiting for it. I hate that little period. So what I do is get the coffee maker ready the night before and I plug it into a timer. I set the timer to make the coffee somewhere around the time I plan to get up. Then when I wake, I can go straight to the coffee pot for a fresh cup with no waiting. That helps a lot.I must admit though, the hangover feeling is no where near as intense as it was with Remeron, Serzone, Trazodone, benzos, or tricyclics. As much as I dislike the Zyprexa hangover feeling, it is minor compared to all the other drugs I've tried. So I just accept it and drink some coffee.
I have noticed that if I sleep around 6 to 7 hours the hangover effect is not so bad. If I sleep 8 to 10 hours, then the hangover effect seems stronger and takes longer to wear off. But regardless, the hangover effect for me is a lot less than any other drug I've tried. It is a minor nuisance that I am willing to deal with. The coffee pot on a timer has been the best help for me in dealing with it.
John> JohnL, you and I are big proponents of Zyprexa (and I wouldn't give it up for anything right now) but I'm just realizing something that I seem to be experiencing with it and I'm wondering if you (or anyone else on it) does also:
>
> I take just 2.5 mg of Zyprexa at night a few hours before bedtime for it to kick in and help get me to sleep; it works like a charm BUT I've noticed a pattern when I wake up in the mornings - after "enough" hours of continuous sleep, I wake up feeling "tired" and I need a cup of strong coffee to perk me out of wanting to just sleep some more (but can't because I must start my day). I'm fine within a few hours of waking, but that initial time frame is rough.
>
> I can't wait till I finish the canister of "Lite" coffee (premixed regular/decaf) because I need full strength java to get me through the mornings. I'd been trying to cut back on my caffeine intake, but for now I'm gonna have to go back up.
>
> Also, I wake up in the early am to use the bathroom and find that I'm a zombie with very heavy eyelids when I do so; this was not the case pre-Zyprexa. Luckily, when I get back into bed, I'm out again immediately.

> So ... JohnL or anyone else who takes Zyprexa at night - do you find it has a "hangover" effect the next day? And if so, how do you deal with this? Thanks.
