In reply to Buprenorphine or Olanzapine? help!, posted by Zo on August 24, 2001, at 19:44:15
Nausea is a common side effect of buprenorphine. It goes away after a little while. Taking some promethazine with it helps. You can avoid it entirely by starting at a low dose and increasing it as tolerated.
BTW, I don't have any statistics, but a lot of people who take opioids for depression do *not* become tolerant -- I think it's probably similar to using benzos for panic disorder or stimulants for ADD, where some people may become tolerant but that's the exception rather than the rule. Withdrawal symptoms are minor and short-lived; you're not going to get "the flu" from discontinuing buprenorphine.
"Addiction" is not a serious risk. You're unlikely to get high on buprenorphine, so don't bother trying < g >. (It does prevent the opioid withdrawal syndrome (including cravings) for people who are already addicted to full agonists, so they'll use it if nothing else is available.)
There's no guarantee that buprenorphine will work for you, but based on your response to Vicodin I tend to think it probably will work if you decide to try it.
I don't have much to say for Zyprexa. I thought it sucked. < g > Buprenorphine doesn't cause weight problems, as far as I'm aware, although it did bring my appetite back immediately when I started taking it for depression.
