The night before last I broke out with big welt-like hives over my body and scalp (soon accompanied by severe diarreah and rectal bleeding) after being on 300mg/day of Wellbutrin for exactly 3 weeks. My Internist thought it was highly unlikely that I would be reacting to the Wellbutrin after so many weeks.
I called GlaxoWellcome Inc., manufacturers of Wellbutrin, and they told me that an allergic reaction such as mine can develop "AT ANY TIME DURING TREATMENT" and that I should consult with my physician about discontinuing the drug. Then they took down all my information to forward to their Product Safety Division. After I shared this conversation with my my doctor, she agreed that I should stop taking the Wellbutrin. Yesterday I saw a Gastroenterologist who felt certain that my hives and possibly the internal bleeding were a drug reaction.
It takes about 42hours after the last dose for the drug to be out of my system completely, and I look forward to tonight at 8pm for that moment.
I urge anyone else who is or has taken Wellbutrin and had these symptoms to call GlaxoWellcome at 1-800-722-9292 and report your experience to them. I would also suggest that we demand GlaxoWellcome to make it clear in the pamphlet that comes with Wellbutrin that allergic reactions can occur AT ANY TIME DURING TREATMENT.
Has anyone had this sort of reaction? If so, have you found a good alternative to Wellbutrin? (Weight gain is a concern for me.)
Thanks,
LauraC
