In reply to Paxil-weight gain, clenching jaw and grinding teet, posted by elsa on May 4, 2001, at 11:23:26
> I have been taking Paxil about 4-5 years for anxiety. Recently I began to clench my jaw and grind my teeth day and night. Never ever experienced anything like this before. 20/20 had program that stated this has been shown as possibility from this med. After more investigation via web search, I find weight gain is something else others have had. I am trying to wean myself off Paxil. Would like to hear from others if they have had any of these problems; how they handled them; and if the weight ever came off!!
Hey elsa, it is so strange that you are just now having these symptoms. I was on Paxil for about 3 mths. (20mg once a day) and I had the teeth grinding at night, as well as some insomnia and weight gain. When I decided to get off the Paxil, I quit cold turkey, which was a BIG mistake. I was layed up in bed sick w/ flu like symptoms for a week and a half, and it was very hard to hold any food down. Before I began Paxil, I weighed around 100 lbs., I quickly put on weight after starting, despite the fact that I was also taking Adderall. I have had a very hard time losing the weight, even though I am still on Adderall, don't eat much at all, excercise 3-5 times a week, and try to eat pretty healthy. I now weigh 110 lbs. (I'm 5 ft.), and this is a healthier weight for me compared to the 100 lbs. Anyway, I have been off the Paxil since the end of Nov. of last year, and it has taken me until now to get to a weight that I am content w/. Oh, the teeth grinding stopped the minute I stopped taking the Paxil. I don't know why you are taking Paxil, but I was taking it for social anxiety. It helped me 100% in that area, but not very much w/ depression, but the weight gain was still not worth it to me. I have ruled out all med's, besides Adderall, for the last few mths., but I just recently decided to try Celexa, which I have been on now for 4 days. I am sorry if this was discouraging news, but I wish someone would have told me these things when I was in your situation, I hope it helps, Good Luck!!!!
