How is Effexor different from Tricyclics?

If Effexor inhibits reuptake of Serotonin, Norepinephrine and to a lesser extent Dopamine (depending on dose), how does that differ from TCAs? Are the side effects REALLY less? Is overdose less dangerous? It's made groundbreaking news here in New Zealand as the drug to end Depression. That's not what I've been reading for years on this erudite board
