In reply to Celexa for anxiety, posted by Maryanne on March 27, 2001, at 20:11:44
Hi
I have been on Celexa for 2 years. The reason that I started was to treat major depression which was characterized with severe unfocused anxiety....all the time......no appetite and severe insomnia.
The first bout of major depression that I had was after the birth of my second child. I was put on paxil .... which took a long time to kick in. Paxil did relieve my anxiety perhaps ......too much. I also had a lot of physical side effects from Paxil [including tremendous weight gain, in ability to orgasm, excessive drowsiness, muscle spasm, inability to concentrate, neck rigidity etc....all on minimum dosage]. So against my doctors advice I discontinued the paxil after 6 months.
Low and behold 6 months later I was right back where I started. This is when I started the Celexa. With in one week I could feel the anxiety abating. I seem to be very drug sensitive and find this to be gentler to my system than the paxil. I will probably be on this drug for a very long time .....my only complaint is that after 6 months the weight had start to slowly creep up and right now I'm just trying to find a diet modification and an excercise combo that fits my hectic lifestyle and works.
BTW I'm on 20mg ... which I believe is the minimum theraputic dose ...but I may be wrong. Perhaps your doctor is ramping you up slowly.
