IJM - Yes, the amitriptyline will make you groogy and lethargic, especially for the first month, during dose titration. This is due to the blocking of histamine H-1 receptors and muscarinic/anticholinergic M-1 receptors. Most people to adjust to these side effects, but the adjustment to these start-up side effects takes longer with the TCAs (like amitriptyline) than with the SSRIs (like Paxil or even Effexor).
