stimulants - immediate vs. sustained release

Posted by michael on March 9, 2001, at 0:35:11

I had the experience that both dexedrine and ritalin were helpful (low doses) - w/energy, concentration etc.... - and contrary to what I had expected, they were even relaxing/calming.

However, when I tried the sustained release versions (dexedrine CR and metadate(ritalin)), each made me feel a bit edgy/wired - kind of more along the lines of what I had thought a stimulant would be like - sort of something along the lines of too much caffeine...

The dosages were roughly equivalent in terms of the amount of medication in my system at any point in time(immediate vs. sustained release). But they had entirely different results for me - they seemed like two different medications (the immediate vs. sustained) rather than just the sustained release of the same medication...

Does that make any sense? Has anyone else experienced that, or heard of something like that (not necessarily w/stimulants)?

Thanks for any info or thoughts... michael
