I've had good luck with pain reduction using that menthol/camphor stuff -- can't think of the name, but it comes in a tiny green bottle with a yellow label, been around forever and a day...

Maybe it's camphopenique? Something like that. I can't swear it does anything, but seems to help the pain and heal them faster for me...
