Hi Shar,

I think it's really important to tell your pdoc what you are taking. My pdoc was not gungho about adrafinil, but never forbid it. Instead we talked about other options, and I agreed to try those first. And then (actually today), she agreed to a adrafinil trial, after I got very depressed with ritalin. I sent away for it but I might try provigal again first, since I did not really have a fair trial of it.

Even when I take vicadin for depression and pms, I tell her I'm doing that. Although she disapproves, she has never threatened me with if you don't stop, I won't be your doctor. Same with my therapist. I do listen to both of their concerns, because I respect both of them alot. My pdoc's main concern about adrafinil was because I am on an MAO inhibitor. I hope I will never be in a position where I feel like I have to lie to either of them, to do what I believe is in my best interest. I would have to leave. Bottom line--it is my depression.

I think you need to go into your session with your pdoc with all the evidence you can gather. I brought in one of JohnL.'s posts and also the english translation that comes with the afrafinil box. Then the two of you should talk about your medication strategy as a collaboration. You also might try talking about provigal also, since that is FDA approved, and tell her some people on this board have been more successful with adrafinil. And let her know that you know you'll need liver tests, just to remind her that you are truely on top of your best interests. And then I would listen to what she has to say--like if there is truely a good reason for her not to support the addition of this medication for you.

Sorry, I'm so long-winded. Good luck. shellie
