Well, I guess Slam isn't quite the right word...
Anyway, a Poetry Slam is a kind of poetry competition, and I used to go to some on occasion in Adams Morgan (Kala Kala Club, I think, and maybe Madam's Organ) when I lived in DC. As the name implies, it can be quite a raucous event, and the competative atomosphere gives the whole thing a palpable edge.
Now that I reflect on it, I guess a Slam isn't really what I had in mind, because I didn't initially consider the competative element, which is not what this place is about. But one thing I do like about Slams is the intensity brought to the stage. Call it an open-mike.
