Boston too. A car is a liability here unless you live off in the suburbs.
Apparently the mass transit system in LA just isn't adequate. Part of that is because the place is so damned *big* and sprawling (so there'd have to be a lot more stops). I don't know about BART (SF) -- any comments on that one?
I tried biking as a means of transportation when I was in Santa Barbara. The problem with this was that it was very hilly there. It was also nasty weather (people insisted that El Nino was to blame), and that didn't exactly help. But there wasn't any other way for me to get to campus -- walking to my office would have taken nearly an hour.
