Maggie - You are probably experiencing withdrawl effects as James has said or an enhancement of side effects. Effexor can cause:
1) abnormality of accomodation - problems with the adjusting of you eyes to distance.
2) asthenia - loss of strength of energy sometimes resulting in vertigo.
3) abnormal thinking or depersonalization or confusion.
4) mydriasis - dilatation of the pupil (maybe causing light flashes)

These are all 'shots in the dark', but I thought they may explain a little of what you are experiencing (then again, maybe not).

Withdraw from Effexor very slowly (at least over a period of a month or two).

For what its worth - Cam W.
