Tina,
You really didn't say why these were the first options. I sstarted on an AD and got some benefit from it but was still having thoughts of suicide. Because of that my first augmentation was for Zyprexa which really worked well to get rid of obsessive thinking. After a little while on that combo I was fealing better but not really good. I had hit a stage of apathy and anhedonia. That's when I started taking Adderall -30mg/day. It has picked up my mood and ability to function throughout the day. It is an amphetamine and does act like one in your body. I don't race around like it was "street" speed but I do notice a difference in my activity level.
I have heard that Ritalin can cause much worse mood swings as each dose wears off. IMO, Adderall is a good and safe activating med if you feel like you need some kind of a boost to alleviate your depression.
