Rachel,
Like you and Mare, I pull my hair, too. I remember it starting in high school. I nearly plucked the top of my head bald a couple of times. When it grew back I had little spikes. ~laughing~
I didn't know it was a disorder until my doctor noticed me doing it. Like Mare said, I tend to do it when I'm either very bored or very stressed and worrying a lot.
My hair grows back as full and thick as it was before I plucked it out. Funny thing, I have very fair eyebrows with a natural arch in the browline, and I rarely pluck my brows at all.. with tweezers or my hands?
I've been on antidepressants (amitryptyline, Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor, trazadone and Wellbutrin), but haven't noticed any difference in the amount of hair pulling I do. Sometimes I probably go several months without doing it.
It's good that you can share your concerns about this with your mother, and good luck.
