Speaking of Provigil...

Posted by becksA on December 18, 2006, at 14:34:57

I have thought about trying this because I have ADD and have lots of trouble focusing and motivating myself for work, school...etc. Does provigil work for this at all? I know the basics of it, so it shouldn't really help the focus aspect, rather just work on "alertness"...am i correct in this? What does it feel like?

Thanks

Prescription amphetamines don't cause anxiety for lots of people when taken as prescribed. You'd be surprised. They can be calming, surprisingly. Perhaps different people react differently, or maybe it's the dosage that makes the difference. I've tried provigil, ritalin, dexedrine, and adderall, and my conclusion was that at least for me, provigil did the least of any of them for ADD (though it was good for wakefulness). It did about zero for me for motivation- I was still unmotivated, just more awake. But yes, more awake meant more alert. It was very good for that.

Oh-by the way, too high of a dose of provigil did make me feel a little speedy. Wide awake, a little speedy, still unmotivated- strange feeling!

For me amphetamines do. I was diagnosed with ADD at age 12 and have taken every one in the book. They worked fine until Social Anxiety came out of nowhere about 5 years ago, and any ADD med on the market really makes my anxiety bad. that's why i thought i'd ask. Doesn't seem like Provigil would do me as much good as I need though....I'm ridiculously distractable, and literally cannot do an essay etc. without something. (Currently Concerta works best, has least bad side effects)

thanks

Oh. Sorry, I wasn't sure if you had used amphetamines or not. I would presume you'd be sensitive to ritalin then, too. Why not try the provigil? Some people have reported that it does help them with ADD- maybe you'd be one of them. Definately worth a try. But don't be a fool like me, thinking if some is a little helpful, some more will be more helpful. Only did that once!
I've also heard that selegeline/Emsam can help with ADD. I'm using Emsam, but it didn't help me with ADD stuff enough on its own, so I am using teeny amount of adderall with it. That's a really good combo for me.

you could try a benzo of some dosage level with the stimulant. A mood stabilizer (anticonvulsant or lithium) might also be a good choice (this could be used in addition to the benzo). BuSpar helps some people with ADHD and smooths out stims--some people hate it though.

With Provigil, I don't think its necessarily an either/or choice. If you can't tolerate doses of stims high enough to help out, I imagine you could try adding in Provigil to get more mileage out of your pre-existing meds. I've read about some combos where the patient takes ritalin AND provigil, or an amphetamine AND provigil, possibly plus other things. I imagine that might be helpful. The only real way to know would be to try it--since youre dealing with a stimulant (albeit an aytpical one), I imagine you should know if its helpful or not within a couple of test doses.

how does 14mg of klonopin sound? lol. even on that for a year, the smallest smount of stims would cause bad anxiety. right now im coming off the klonopin...it was just too much, making bad decisions on it...and im going on lithium...no incredible effects from that yet though.
