What does Welbutrin actually do?

Posted by Karalyn on January 26, 2004, at 3:03:07

I think im gonna go back to Lexapro. Ive been trying this herbal thing called Amoryn. my anxiety and insomnia is back. But I have sexual SE's when on SSRI's. so I may try welbutrin. but what does it actually do? somewhere on this site i read it can increase anxiety. I wish i could have a miracle happen and have something to stop anxiety, sexual SE's, not sleeping at night, and not have it make me gain weight. did i cover the big ones?

wellbutrin can cause all those side effects, but i think the lack of sleeping and anxiety might be a part of depression (for me at least) so wellbutrin could help if it is the right drug. If it gets rid of the depression you may feel better and sleep better. and it does not usually make people gain weight. I am not familiar with lexapro, but id say give wellbutrin a shot and if it does bother you go off it. (i know it isn't that easy)
good luck with what ever you choose

Hi

I've been on Wellbutrin for 2 1/2 months...initially prescribed for depressio, anxiety, and chronic pain. At first I thought it was my imagination, but I thought my anxiety had gotten worse. When I talked to my Pdoc, he said yes, entirely possible!! So, he prescribed Xanax to take as needed. I have since been hearing that this is common, that many of these don't help anxiety at all, and that often, antianxiety drugs are given in addition to the antidepressants. Everyone is different, of course, so the only way to know is to try Wellbutrin...and by the way...others I'd tried caused weight gain, but Wellbutrin hasn't!! Good luck.

For those who need to know, Wellbutrin generally WILL disrupt sleep. It's used as an activator and a focusing agent for people with ADHD. It also stimulates circulation, helping with male erectile problems and ejaculation, the two most common side effects of AD's.

I tried Wellbutin from my ADHD but cannot take it alone as it makes me agitated and irritable. I now take 37.5mg once a day to help offset the sexual side effects of my Effexor. It works very well for this. Effexor has enabled me to control my streaming thoughts. Too much Wellbutrin negates this benefit.

Every person has different levels of tolerance to different drugs. What works for one person at a certain doesage may not work for you.

I use a pill splitter to cut the 75mg pills in half. It works great.

If you responded well to Lexapro but didn't like the sex effects (I don't like to call anything that happens to 70%+ of the people that take it a "side effect"), you just might find that Serzone does the trick toward the upper end of its dosage range. Alternatively, you could augment the Lexapro with Mirapex or Requip (preferable), bromocriptine or amantadine, a small dose of Serzone (or trazodone, but that's sedating), or 15mg of Remeron (this would likely resolve your insomnia and sexual dysfunction, but its highly sedating and carries a substantial risk of weight gain).

oops, wrong thread, sorry. This belongs under "Zoloft to replace Xanax XR for social, gen anxiety"
