IM FAT NOW !!

Posted by panic_attack on January 25, 2004, at 8:32:24

I am taking only 5 mg of Lexapro and have gained over 25lbs in the past 4 months. I occasionally take Remeron to sleep, maybe twice a month but that also contributed to my my weight gain. How can this stop?!?! Is it true that Wellbutrin will help me lose weight? I don't think that I eat that much but I am constantly gaining weight!

Weight loss is listed as one of the side effects of Wellbutrin. It's caused me to lose weight, and most of the ppl I know who are on it have also lost weight. I guess everyone responds differently, but it may be worth a try for you. Good luck!

Hi:

Well I can tell you my story. I've been on antidepressants for over 14 years. I've alo gone though tons of other meds. I've gained about 70lb's. When you are trully not able to get out of bed for 22 hours a day, could kill yourself at anytime, and can't even go to the store..never mind finding a girlfriend...Unemployed for about 5 years..live with your parents..well you see the point.

A few things to remember is that most serotogenic drugs cause weight gain. Would I trade off some happiness for weight?...well let's say I am *quite* happy these days, and many, many thanks to medication. The worst is cycling on and off meds...that is dangerous and could mess up brain chemistry related to your depression. It is irresponsible. Take your meds like you are married to them.

Now...for some sollutions..if sex is a problem..Viagra is your answer. If you feel there are problems with weight gain, talk to your doctor, as there are some meds and hormones that can be taken to offset weight. I am trying some proper exercising as well, and two thinks I did are cut completely to (I mean NO lapses!) of diet pop/soda, and start exercise by walking until your body feels a bit better, then go for more. I lost 80 pounds with the above, but gained it during my depression, as at first I didn't really care. Strike a nice careful balance betten brain and body. I'd choose that over the black-dog of depression anyday. Even if I am a little fat, just don't worry so much about it. People are too obssesed with weight, which leads to eating disorders and prejudice.

Best,
James

I cannot say as to weather or not lexapro has greatly contributed to your weight gain. I will admit the drugs affect people in different ways.

I lost weight on celexa, and had to add remeron to gain it back.

Anyhow, Wellbutrin can help the weight issue. YOu may try a low dose of it as augmentation.

Aside from this, exercise, and perhaps try night dosing of lexapro (although it may worsen insomnia)

Best of Luck

I was on Lexapro and Welbutrin at the same time and gained 10 pounds. I'm not sure if it was due to the Lexapro or the Welbutrin. I'm off both now, but I wonder if I'll lose the weight I gained...

Hi!
Something you have to realize about that Prozac Truth website is that it is very very very anti psych medication. If you look further into that website it has not one positive thing about psych drugs but sells its own natural remedies. In my opnion it is a very disheartening website to those looking for positive or correct information.
God Bless,
Lexy

At least they inform people of WHY they are gaining weight (these drugs slow your metabolism). Regardless of trying to sell vitamins, they are getting important information out there. My doctor couldn't even give me this information, either in denial in hopes to keep me on the drug & make more $$$ or because he's uneducated. Information is power and you can not deny that! Unless a person plans to stay on these drugs for life and can't handle the truth, it's stupid not to educate yourself on ALTERNATIVES to anti-depressants. Let the truth set you free!

So am I, but I go to the gym.

Most neuro psych meds DO cause weight gain- A little for some people, a lot for others. I found pdocs to be very honest and quite distressed by this- but would you rather die?
Unfortunately, the nature of the illness also causes weight gain for many of us; so called "atypical depression" is the most common sort, and the brain craves carbs and sugsr to try and make what it needs to right itself, but it can't. Out spread the hips... There's also a lot of eating out of loneliness, despair, self medication. Very normal human feelings and frustrations.
Excercise will really help- for me tooling around town on a bike reversed a lot of damage, and a fit body will be happy with spinach instead of Cheesy Poofs. The social isolation this illness brings will also make one turn to food; It's more complex than just the drugs. You can fight it- Just make some choices. I took up racing cross country on meds (no evil nueroleptics), was very fit , looked GOOD! Then a pair of knee reconstructions blew it, but I'm starting back. You may not ever be a size 6 again, but so what? I looked better as a hardbody healthy 12, and guys dug it. I'm at the gym 5-6 days a week, makes me feel better, and I'm not the biggest one there either. And exercise will do more to fix your mood than just drugs ever can.

That Prozac truth site? Total hogwash. Read between the lines and you see Scientology written all over it. Prozac is the least awful of the SSRIs, both in terms of weight gain and painting the inside of your head beige.
Forgot this in the other post.
