I did it!! Off Effexor with NO WITHDRAWAL symptoms

Posted by waterlily on August 9, 2003, at 20:12:10

After everything I've read on this board about going off of Effexor being a major nightmare, I expected the worst. I've been on Effexor 150 mg for about 4 months and had some nasty side effects going on it at first. Almost two weeks ago I started tapering off because of insomnia and daytime drowsiness. I've not had Effexor for two days and I've had no withdrawal effects that I can tell. I am still on my 300 mg of Wellbutrin, so perhaps I would have had some problems if I weren't taking the Wellbutrin.

Now I just need to find something else to add to the Wellbutrin to help with anxiety, besides imipramine, Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac, or Serzone, that is. I've already tried them.

I truly hope you will have no w/d symptoms, but I should warn you--mine did not start until about a week after stopping, and they got worse for a week or so, then stayed the same for about 6 more weeks, then went away again. I was on for longer though, almost a year.

Don't get too worried though! A lot of people don't have w/d, from what I read. Don't let it become a self-fulfilling prophecy....sorry if I alarmed you!

Hi - good for you with the EffexorXR taper! I had a similar experience, going from 150mg down slowly and gradually with no withdrawal. However, like the other person who posted, a few days AFTER I was completely off the EffexorXR, I had some very MILD *electric head*, brain shock feelings, but not so much as to interfere with my functioning at all.

As for what to combine with Wellbutrin to ward off anxiety, you indicated that you've already tried several a-d's, but what about anti-anxiety meds such as a benzo or BusPar? Perhaps someone here might have experience with this combo.

2 days? That is much to early to say you had no withdrawl. I didn't have any symptoms the first 2 days either... they started after about 4 days, and didn't really kick in to high gear till around 9 or 10 days.

Forgot to tell you that I also tried BuSpar and it made me sick to my stomach. Maybe I didn't give it enough time. I think a benzo is more likely to be the key because Ativan works well for me when I use it. I only use Ativan for acute anxiety and sleep problems, but haven't tried it on a daily basis for general anxiety.

The night before last was the first time I went without Ambien or any sleep aid in a while. I had a terrible night and yesterday I was a practically a zombie. Tried to go to sleep last night and couldn't so I decided that I was killing myself by trying to go off sleep meds and Effexor at the same time. I took an Ativan and slept a solid 7 hours straight.

This is the end of the thread.
