Posted by davex on August 8, 2003, at 10:55:11

Hi to all, and apologize for my awful english.
Coul danyone answer if dep could be cause by low level of testosterone in the blood?
My personal story was about years on SSRI without any righ effect and with a continuos decrease of sex desire.
Currently i've no (sob!) sex desire at all, even if i stopped AD since 1,5 years.
Could anyone help me to know? is there the possibilility to use medical testosterone supplement for the increase of libido or other drug?
I'm waiting for any answer or question to post better....
Thanx very much for your help!
Dave

Yes, all round. This is evidence depression or
antidepressants can cause low T levels. Get your
T levels checked and discuss with a doc about the results and possible supplementation.

Dave- Antidepessants usually do decrease sex drive. But I think that you said that you have been off of them for 1.5 years. Therefore, your low sex drive is not related to antidepressants.

You might have low testosterone. And I think that low testosterone could contribute to depression. You should go to your doctor to get a blood test.

Yes. There has been shown a clear correlation between male depression and low levels opf testosterone. See for example:

http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/2003/01.09/01-testosterone.html

Also, it has been shown that SSRIs cause lower levels of testosterone. See, for example:

Its worth getting checked out if you are a refractorily depressed male, particularly if you are over thirty. Oftentimes your family doctor can order the testosterone test, there is no need to go to a specialist endocrinologist for the free testosterone level test.

Other good tests for any refractorily depressed person is to get blood plasma cortisol levels checked, to rule out high cortisol (Cushing's disease). And an overnight sleep study is worth a shot if you are refractory depressed, this rules out obstructive sleep apnea which can be a underlying cause of depression/anxiety.
