I think this board goes through phases with topics sometimes. A while back it was Lexapro, another time it was benzos. A topic grabs interest and several threads go on at once. If you'll look through the archives, I think you'll find that fish oil is being discussed more right now than ususal.

I don't have any opinion on how well it works since I haven't tried it.

I think if you gave people sugar pills a significant number would show marked improvement. So no doubt some people will argue that Fish Oil extracts help with depression, even if it really doesn't do anything. I personally do take fish oil, but for physical health reasons. I suffer from depression, among other things, and it hasn't helped the depression.

It's the flavor of the month

EFA's have been used by many, I have posted about them here for years. Lots of treatments get "discovered" here but none have proven to be
the treatment that knocks out depression for a great many people. Useful, yes.

Did you take enough dosage of fish oils for your depression? Each individual vary. Some need only 1000 mg of EPA and DHA, while others like me need 5000 mg of EPA and DHA. Also, did you take it long enough?

Fish oil is definitely more than a sugar pill.

The eskimos who take 18,000 mg of EPA and DHA a day has significantly less depression than people whose diet lack EPA and DHA.

Fish oils work for MOST people. But you got to take it at a dosage that will treat your depression and at a long enough time.

I have OCD with depression. But 5000mg of EPA and DHA (not the weight of the capsules but the actual amount of EPA + DHA) lifted my depression in 2 weeks. I'm now 90% depression free and 70-80% OCD free.

Freedom,

I was just wondering whether you have ever tried a lower maintenance dosage of fish oil. Maybe you can maintain with less.

I tried with 3-4 g a day, they aren't effective. I need at least 5g a day.

I take cod liver oil once at night, something like 20 minims, whatever that is. Is this enough for depression, cause I haven't noticed any difference. If not, how many minims (or x number of capsules) should I be taking?

Whoa! I had to go and look up what a minim is.

Turns out it's an archaic volume measurement, with about 16 minims to the mililitre. At 5 mililitres to the teaspoon, you're talking 1/4 teaspoon.

Keep taking the cod liver oil. That's a safe daily dose. But, get some fish oil, i.e. fish *body* oil. If you're in Canada, you should have no trouble finding salmon oil. Walmart carries it.

Most people are shooting for 5 grams a day of fish oil, though some are taking much more than that. 5 grams would approximate to 5/4 teaspoons, or 1 1/4 tsp, or five times what you're currently taking.

So, for the depression....should I be taking more than what I am now, like 3, 4, 5 times more?

Yes, five times as much, but not of cod liver oil. It has too many vitamins in it. Fish (body) oil, usually just called fish oil, or by type of fish, as in salmon oil.
