mom took away zyprexa

Posted by adamie on June 1, 2002, at 19:07:55

yesterday i took zyprexa 5mg. 2 hours after being in bed it put me to sleep. this was maybe 2am. but it kept me sleepy whenever i woke up so i slept more and more until 4pm. and i kept wanting to sleep. grandma and mom got very angry. and when out of bed i just felt like doing nothing, i could hardly get the motivation to move around. i would just sit in my chair with tv on.. soooo tired and sleepy and i would fall asleep in my chair. anyway mom got very angry and took away my zyprexa. now it is 8pm and i took a shower shortly before. would the strong daytime sleepiness go away in time? because the zyprexa seems to have a calming effect and i certainly haven't had much mind torture today just the old very severe depression. but it's certainly not livable like this. sleepy and not wanting to do anything except sleep. i still am quite sleepy right now. would this effect go away? well i dunno if my mom would let me take it again anyway. i see new pdoc on june 5th.

before this zyprexa i would only get like 2 hours or so sleep a night. although tylenol pm helped a bit when i took it and maybe i slept 3-4 hours with it the one time i took it.

perhaps i should stay on that for sleep, for now. but my appetite is extremely low.

also i stayed on the paxil 20mg. i hope it helps. i hate these days

Adamie,

When I took zyprexa I had the same experience but it was much less of a problem after about 2 weeks -- others have reported it not a problem after just 1 week. You may want to drop down to 2.5mg and work your way up. There are also things you could take to augment the zyprexa if it works, like provigil I imagine.

hi. i dunno if i should take it anyway. i stopped it last time for a reason. and now being on it i just feel so strange, and so unmotivated, and it feels like time is moving by so slow. i feel very bleh and like i am living in some different type of world. it's like i'm a stranger in my own home. i dunno. feel very strange. so no more of this.

I started off at 5 mg then went up to 10mg. My family hated me on it...I was like a zombie. Even after being on it for months, and gaining serious weight, that drugged feeling never went away. I quit taking it because I have 3 kids and that's not a side effect I can deal with. I slept 11 or 12 hrs a night and when I finally woke up I was so groggy that the house looked terrible, I didn't care if my kids were in the house or in the road. I took 2 naps a day and went to bed just as soon as they did. I quit taking it and am now taking Tegretol. So far, no sleepiness.

Can I ask why you quit Geodon?

There is another medicine called Risperdal that
is in the same class of medicines and gives some
of the same benefits as Zyprexa, but it doesn't
have the drowsiness and weight gain as notable
side effects.

I quit Geodon because I became very nauseous, had a severe headache everyday that gradually got worse and would not go away with medicine and I became very suicidal on it. If it weren't for my daughter I would not be here writing you. I hate Geodon. I also became that way on Prozac. Maybe it's just my body's system or something.

Hi John and Adamie,

Just wanted to reply to John about the Risperdal which is an old anti-psychotic but is used now in lower doses than before. I am on a really, really low dose as I am sensitive to drugs and it takes me awhile to go thru the side effects etc..

I was started on Risperdal .25 for a month, now am up to .5 mg... I take it in the evening and I take the Celexa in the morning. I started on the 10 mg Celexa for two weeks, then 20, now 30 and will go up to 40 if I do well on it.

No problems except dry mouth at first with the Celexa and I am finally sleeping thru the night with the Risperdal and dont feel groggy in the morning. Of course my BiPolar II is not as bad as some and you will have to work with your pdocs..

Good luck, Adamie, hope you are feeling better soon.
Your mom is just looking out for you. As a mom myself, we hate to see our children hurting in any way..

Adamie,

It helped "me" with sleep.
Of course I do still take the benadryl or tylenol pm, but before the Risperdal, the benadryl was NOT working and I would waken frequently or would not be able to go back to sleep after the third time that I woke up. I am not sure if it is the combation of the Celexa with the Risperdal or the fact that I am bone tired after a full day of working.

Plus, I am over 50 and the old hormones dont kick in anymore so I do not have the monthly insanity that I had for over 40 years, except when I was pregnant, then would have the baby blues afterwards. What a life!

Just do it one day at a time. I know that sounds stupid and insensitive cuz I have been where you are now. But looking back, I wish that I could have just kicked back a little and not taken every darn thing so personaly or had lived in less of a drama. Even now the old feelings come back and I will find myself in that black place or find myself endlessly doing some stupid task when I am exhausted. I just have to talk to myself and try to stop and bring myself back to reality.
I hope you can find some little happiness and peace in small things, even for a minute at a time. A babies smile can work a miracle.

Hi Oona,

Does the Risperdal leave you lethargic
and sleepy all during the daytime?
This is a common complaint of Zyprexa.
But I have talked to people on Zyprexa with
this problem and many times they switch to
Risperdal and the problem goes away.

The antianxiety effects exerted by all the
APs may help with nighttime sleep. I believe
Risperdal is also partly a mild antihistamine.

Hi John,

Lethargic, Heck no! Also I cannot be sleepy and lethargic at my job. I am going all day long. That is why I stopped the Wellbutrim. It raised hell with my concentration, then shot my blood pressure sky high. So I stopped that right away (5 weeks). Actually the Zoloft that I was on was fine (7 years) but when I started cutting back to get off of it (for personal reasons) the side effects were so bad that it made me mad and then I really wanted to get off of it. Can not stand the fact that I have to be on meds, but now will stay with the Celexa and Risperdal and the pdoc said that maybe will have to be on some regime all my life. Yuch, but is better than severe depression or manic attacks that alienate you from all.

Just a little worried about long term effects of Risperdal as the doc says she has to check me every 3 months to make sure I am not stiffening up or having some wierd physical reaction. I hear some people do that take it long term and in larger doses. Is it a relation to Haldol?

Zyprexa knocked me out when I first took it, but now it allows me to sleep soundly - if a little long - but be awake during the day. I would give it time and also maybe take it a little earlier in the evening - around 10pm - so you have time to sleep and still get up at a reasonable hour.

When I first started risperdal and I was still in a psychotic episode I was overly tired. My doctor had me take it before bed instead of in the day because it made me so sleepy.
