xanax problems xanax xr

Posted by rogdog on November 22, 2000, at 15:38:07

hi everybody.. I have a question for anyone here that knows a little about xanax. I am taking 3 mg. of xanax right now and also ,just started zyprexa and effexor xr last week.for the first 3 days on the zyprexa and effexor I actually started to feel better, now it seem to be causing some anxiety, but I know that this can happen and may fade with in a week or so. but the problem is with my xanax I started out taking 1.5 milligrams a day, I read somewhere that for one reason or another some people produce more enzymes in there liver or somewhere?? that break down the xanax and wont let it get into the bloodstream(where it needs to be!). it seems to me that my body is metabolizing this stuff to much. does anyone know of a vitamin or something that can augment or increase the bioavailability of xanax. or is there another drug out there that is similar to xanax other than; ativan, buspar or other benzo's, xanax has been the only one that has helped woth my anxiety, but I know first hand of the withdrawls of xanax and its not fun,but is it safe to take 4 or 5 mgs. of this stuff a day? any responses will be greatly appreciated, thanks , rog

RD,

I have taken 3 mg. per day of Xanax for many years, and have had breakthrough anxiety for most of that time. I started taking Neurontin with Xanax a few months ago. I noticed right away that Neurontin had a very calming effect on me, and I would sometimes forget to take a dose of Xanax. They work well together in decreasing anxiety in my body; my understanding is that Neurontin bi-passes the liver completely, so that should not be a problem. Strangely enough, over the last few months, I've gone from 3 mg. of Xanax to only 1 mg. Some days Neurontin works even better than Xanax, and other days it doesn't work as well. FYI, I take approximately 600 mg. per day of Neurontin.

Just my 2 cents worth.

rogdog:

A word to the wise is sufficient...

Three mgs. of XANAX is a whopping dose considering the basic starting dose of the drug
is a measily 0.25 mgs.

I would seriously consider lowering this as you may run into problems trying to get off
of this drug (which you mentioned you had).

Yes, it is addicting, far more so than the outdated Valium.

If you're worried about liver damage, start taking a *natural* product called Milk Thistle
(available at drug/health food stores). I take this for HCV.

New reports have found milk thistle in high amounts to also cause liver damage. Be warned on this one.

I think the anxiety effect of effexor will lessen and then you can taper down on the xanax. I've done that with a.d.s and antianxiety meds. before. Maybe you can take a little less xanax and do some exercise to lessen the anxiety-that works for me sometimes. Just trying to help...

Kazoo,

I disagree. Actually, 3 mg. of Xanax is considered a relatively low dose for controlling panic disorder. I also started out taking 1.5 mg. of Xanax almost 6 years ago, and worked my way up to 3 mg. within a few months. It is also considered to be a very safe drug, barring dependency, which will happen with any benzo that is taken for any length of time. A slow taper is imperative to getting off any benzo, especially Xanax. I went off Xanax several years ago for a year, and my life during that year was hell. If Xanax, Klonopin, or Valium allows anyone to live a functional life, more power to them. I'm on Neurontin and Xanax because so far this combo works better than Neurontin or Xanax individually.

Well I have taken 10 mg of xanax a day, one or 2 of it under my tongue so it dosen't have to digest, it just goes straight to the brain (my doc said to do it) but then again I am addicted to xanaxs, they run my life infact, even though the withdrawls I have not went thru yet because Im to scarred and don't know how to reduce my intake any more than I have, I also have heard withdrawls are bad. I just know I wish I would have never started taking them, but even more so I wish I would have never had nightmare Panic Attacks!
