Retrying Nardil -----Anita

Posted by shellie on October 7, 2000, at 16:37:39

Anita, since we've both had success with nardil, I wondering if you've ever gone back and retried Nardil. Also I wondering why you didn't switch to parnate when nardil became ineffective. Also, I can't remember if you have taken serzone.

I wondering because I torn between letting myself build up the serzone and see how that works, vs. going back on nardil or parnate because my depression is so severe right now. I have this inclination to go back on nardil because it worked so well for me, with not very many side effects at 30mg for so many years. Or try parnate. My new pdoc is trying to keep me off of MAOIs because he feels they limit the augmentation process.

You didn't respond to my "stopping, restarting MAOIs" thread, so can I assume you didn't try nardil again after a break? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Shellie

Hi Shellie,

Just to but in...

I mentioned your experiences with dopaminergics and hydrocodone to my doctor today. He felt that your reaction to the hydrocodone was simply a typical euphoriant effect, unrelated to depressive neurochemistry.

Forget all the B.S. I came up with.

:-)

Probably, your doctor is right, although I have to say without it, I couldn't have made it through the last couple of days. And I know it doesn't give everyone an energizing effect. So my reaction isn't exactly typical. Nevertheless, I am building up serzone, feeling totally confused about whether to go back to MAOIs; will see my new pdoc on Monday for fifteen minutes. That's the time he gives for meds. He will see you very often, and it is easier to get fit in with a doctor who has fifteen minute appointments. But I have fifteen minutes worth of questions--not including the time for his answers. So I may make two appointments. My insurance (primary & co-payment pay 100%). And he will talk to you on the phone for five minutes without charging, then from 6 to fifteen minutes is $40. Luckily he's only a couple of blocks from my therapist so he's convenient to see on mondays and thursdays.

One thing seems so strange to me. I was hurting so much this morning (my depression in my chest) that I could barely talk and I was feeling how am I going to do my shoot at 10am. But then when the people come to be photographed (today a three year old with bright red-orange hair), I forget all about the pain--I don't feel it. It's amazing to me to go through such an unconscious change so quickly. Then after they leave (they're here for about two hours), I still feel not depressed for a while, then it sets in again, but not as badly. I am grateful for that at least.

So any great insights, new meds to start after seeing your new pdoc?

Good night Scott,
Shellie

Hi Shellie,

Sorry I missed your earlier post about retrying nardil. I haven't done so because I gained a lot of weight on it and had other serious side effects I don't want to deal with again. I did try Parnate, but it didn't help, and I had a bad reaction to it when I was on a high dose. Haven't tried Marplan because of the weight gain issue, but may try selegiline in the future.

Did you stop the nardil because of poop-out? If that was the only reason, I'd bet if you started it again, it would work just fine.

good luck,
anita
