bipolar disorder

Posted by tim brennan on November 25, 1998, at 22:04:02

My wife has bipolar disorder. As you can imagine, it has caused quite a strain on our household and I was wondering if you could suggest a site on the net where one might interact with others as an alternative to therapy. I don't mean to completely eliminate therapy but as my finances do not permit me to afford as much therapy as I,perhaps, should be providing for my wife and child as well as self, I am interested in talking with others with similar circumstances.
Thank You

my wife also has bipolar, and yes,i know the feeling .at times it is like walking on eggshells.for me,anyway,it swings from her not being able to look after any of the housework so i have to do it all and not going anywhere or even showering very often to keeping the house almost hospital clean and never wanting to sit down, stay still, stay home,or relax!the worst part is these swings seem natural to her and she cant understand why i cant keep up with her highs!! i have learned various methods of coping but in the end i am left wondering how long this can go on and how soon before i have my first heart attack trying to keep up (or down) with her. thnks,Blair Doggett

My husband has bp and only 5yrs into dx. All the years before we tried and cried and swept a lot under the carpet ignoring what we could and dealing with what we tho`t we could. There IS NO EASY way especially if you love them and don`t have any clue about their inner pain. Looking back the symptoms were always there we just didn`t know how to pukt it all together.Strong family who are supportive and pray daily; and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, believing He has a plan for one`s life...are the only answers I can recommend to anyone. Everything is solvable when you give your life to Jesus Christ and the day to day living out of life to His control. I can really only speak for myself to say that this is how I cope with Karl`s disease and how it daily affects our lives... everything!!

Tim,
There is a great support group of people who have bipolar significant others called bpso. It is all done thru E-mail and is full of helpful hints, others experiences and lots of info. Most of us on the list find it very beneficial. To apply, go to the website www.bpso.org and look for BPSO Mailing List. You cannot have bipolar disorder and be on the list, you have to love someone who has it.It is a great place when you need to talk to someone who understands and has been there. Penny

Hi Tim,
My wife has bipolar as well. I have a similar circumstance. I don't have much to say right now, but I can relate. Let me know if you just want to "talk" about the ups and downs of having a spouse with bipolar. I don't know of any websites but can relate my experiences. You can handle it, my friend, when you understand what you're dealing with, hang in there.
