Hazy watercolor washes
In tints of muted blue,
Ozone-scented orgasm,
A storm’s electric hue,
Steam rising from asphalt,
An afterglow long due,
Oily puddles underfoot
For the romantic few
Who trod amid the lovers,
As spires and hot rain flew
Into a frenzied passion,
And what else could I do
But let it sluice o’er me
As the thunder groaned, “I do,
I do love your flashy,
Trashy talk,” but the city knew,
And sculpted foggy tributes,
Vapor monuments that blew
Across slick streets sodden
With the sky’s kiss, so true.

Just would like to know, why "vapor" not "vapour"? I thought right away, I saw that word and wanted to replace with vapour.. don't know, just seems richer. Is the vapor you're referring to a very thin one? I can't picture it. Send me another picture, please?

Atticus, woke up this after noon. fortified my constitution with an energy drink and read the above. I'd just come from a sea-side orchard-meadow. I think vapor = American spelling and vapour = Canadian/British spelling. But, I could be wrong.

Yes, I love that smell. It's a warm, friendly summer smell. It's a smell of resolution, the calm after the storm smell. And I like that the mist gets into your nose and your skin, it makes me feel nice and soft.

After a particularly heavy thundershower in NYC on an especially hot day, dancing phantoms of water vapor -- not unlike fog -- swirly about the asphalt as it steams. The wind currents created by the tall buildings can make them almost seem to be performing. In the poem, this is the city's gift back to the sky. Atticus

Yes, that's right. As an Irish kid raised in Manhattan, those kinds of distinctions were perpetually tripping me up in school. My grandmother, who lived with us, used the UK spellings at home. It took me a while to purge most of them ("grey" still often slips in) from my own writing. Atticus

Me as well. Here I saw it as a kind of dreamy lassitude following an almost sexually eruptive encounter between the city and the sky, between the artificial and the natural. Atticus
