If Self-Employed How Many Hours?

Posted by Phillipa on September 13, 2006, at 16:19:47

This is for my husband if you're a self employed custom boat painter how many hours a week would you work. And he's in his lat 40's. Thanks Phillipa

I'm not sure if you're looking for someone who currently does this for a living or not. Although it is not my profession, I would think that I'd work enough hours to be able to afford my expenses and ensure that the jobs are done within the requested timeframe.

I'm curious...why are you asking this?

I guess that would depend on what his financial needs are and how many hours it would take to meet those needs.

Agree with gg and Wildflower.

One other practical issue might be that making sure the business is steady, or earning enough for times when business decreases, may mean working more at any one time than is necessary for income at that time.

Sometimes, you need to work more, in order to get more business later-- ie keep your business name circulating, have people referring to you, etc.

So there'a kind of overall need to work enough to secure the ongoingness of the business, which could be more than your income requirements-- ie to prevent the business from falling off, at some future time.

But those are all practical business/income issues.

The other important ones are how much he enjoys the work and what other things he likes/needs to do.

For example, if you two like vacations, or other activities, he might be prone to work less than necessary for maximum income-- because if you have enough, you want to enjoy time together.

Or he might be a workaholic (like my SigO) and just need psychologically to be working night and day and a few extra hours beyond.-- Or he might worry a lot about income, and therefore be afraid to slack off, because someday, there might not be enough. So temperament-- and security needs-- play a part.

How many hours a week does your husband work?

yeah-- that can be a drag.

My SigO comes home late for dinner and then runs into the study to get more work done, until stumbling out at 11pm 12 am, or even later to "get a little nap."

I always wonder-- what kind of "little nap" are you going to take at 1:30 am????

Supposedly, after this little nap, we'll have a lovely pre-sleep time of conversation etc-- except this means I'm supposed to wait until ??when??? to go to sleep--

plus, after the "nap" SigO is invariably barely awake, so that sentences like, "mumblemumble they mumble should ...had counsel...general staff could have.....mumble... something..."

in response to my asking, so how was your day?

Apparently the general staff...tried...get rid of...himmumble...too late...mumble.

I have yet to understand what that had to do with Sig's day yesterday.
