How Does Disability for Nine Years Affect Job Now?

Posted by Phillipa on July 15, 2006, at 12:46:20

I keep thinking that is I got a partime job in some aspect of nursing I would get out of myself stop worrying constantly and maybe get better again. What do you tell an employer where you were for 9years and you were on and still are on Disability. I can't lose it as it's the only income coming in right now. And I only want partime to begin with Any thoughts it would have to be nursing. Thanks Love Phillipa

Phillipa,

Why don't you see if you can get work at a nursing home or rehab center part time. They are always needing people OR could you get a temp nursing job through a temp agency?

That's what I want. But get this. I have a current NC nursing license. And l5yrs experience in all aspects of nursing from ICU, med/surg, telemetry, surgical, was Director of a Nursing Home for 8 months. But that was way back when. Last was full time psych. Anyway the State of NC says no problem just go back to work. Well they don't use RN's unless it's the hospital or pediatrics(Can't stand that) and the hospitals say you need to go back to school. Two or more months of computer work, then full time med/surg, then full time psych till you can go parttime. The Nursing Board said it's a Catch 22 as hospitals are allowed to set their own policys. I've asked a CNA on our street who works in assisted living no jobs for RN's either. So How can I do the above when I don't know if I can handle the stress of parttime? Figure that one out. Love Phillipa ps the pediatrics was in a docs office they only use techs in the doctors offices. That's Charlotte for you. Oh and I turned 60 so the heavy lifting is out

Hi Phillipa

I don't have any answers I just wanted to say that I am somewhat in the same boat. I haven't been well enough to work for 5 years and the main job that I am qualified for is highly stressful in all sorts of ways. I had a baby at the end of last year so who knows when I will ever be able to work if ever.

When you say you think working will make you better; well I have this thing where I keep thinking I am somehow making myself more unwell by not trying hard enough (to do more things). It makes me feel even more depressed; I hope you don't get that too.

phillipa - are you sure there are no opportunities in assisted living/nursing homes? my mom (an RN) worked in one part-time. She lives in Canada though. And she quit really fast and went back to the hospital to work in the chronic care ward.

you may also want to consider working 1-on-1 with geriatric patients privately. I'm sure there are some older folks who would pay to have their own personal RN part-time.

Fuschia that's exactly how I feel. I'm older and you have more time but are thoughts are the same. What do you do with yours? I mean how do you manage to feel good about yourself? I'm sleeping later and later and I'm afraid to let my husband get a job as I'm terrified of being alone. Unrealistic but I am overwhelmed. Maybe you could babblemail me. Love phillipa

Phillipa, I do a lot of reading and since I went on the Lamictal I've done few short diversion kind of courses. I spend a lot of time looking after the baby right now but I know that's not going to last.

I don't feel that good about myself partly because I'm depressed. When I'm not so bad I say 'I'm ill' or 'I was ill'and I think that it's not my fault. I do struggle to try to get some meaningful or useful activity going but it's very hard with this illness.

I think Octopusprime's idea about one on one work is good if you're up to it. Have you done things to test the water as in see how you go with some activity? Before last year I signed up for a few low stress things but I always had to cancel them after my initial attempts. From that I could tell there was no way I would be able to work at that time.

Oh, that is like me last year. My grandma sent me a cheque for my birthday and many months later I still had not cashed it. Then she died and I missed out. Not that that was the most important part of our relationship I hasten to add.
