Acupunture for Effexor XR withdrawal

Posted by 3days2 on August 29, 2005, at 16:56:17

Hi,
I have been off Effexor XR since mid July having weaned like I was instructed to. I have not felt good since. I am having everyside effect you can imagine and I even went to my PC doctor thinking that there was really something wrong with me. I had a battery of blood tests all come back normal and my SIL called to tell me that it could be the withdrawal effects of Effexor. She recommended acupunture for me. Has anyone tried it here if so did it work?
Thanks
Eileen

Hi Eileen,

I tried acupuncture for anxiety. It made things much worse for about three days and then I returned to where I had been before the treatment. I thought it must have just been coincidence but I had it done a second time and the same thing happened. It worked great for pain though.

How long were you on Effexor? It's doubtful that you would be having withdrawal for over a month. When you stopped Effexor I did have the usual brain electrical shocks for about 3 or 4 weeks max.

You might consider going on another antidepressant such as Prozac or Lexapro for a short time and then weaning off that. This will take the place of the Effexor on a biochemical level at least. Then once you are ready you can stop that medication. These SSRIs tend to be much easier to stop taking in my experience.

Marsha,
I tried it for the Withdrawal symptoms and didn't feel all that great (better) afterward. It definately has been a trying time for me. I have another appt tomorrow and hope that works better.

I was on Effexor Xr for about 2 yrs. I started weaning from 225 to 150 on that for a yr and then 150 to 75 for 6 months then 75 to 37.5 for 2 months. Anyhow, my sister in law read that some people have withdrawal for up to a couple of yrs.
My symptoms definately include increased anxiety which I know is causing my stomach upset, but everything else, fatigue, joint pain, dizziness, foggy head, electrical shocks still are going on. I went to my PC and had 4 blood tests, lime disease, arthritus, thyroid, and anemia and all came back normal. I am so frustrated and I don't want to go back on meds just yet I really want to try without for a few months.
I am hoping that acupunture with help.
Thanks for your imput.

Hi Eileen,
I have several posts on this board documenting my cold turkey approach to quitting effexor. I quit August 5th so I'm on Day 25 without it. I must say, I'm still not without symptoms but comparitively speaking, it's MUCH better.
Out of desparation, I had acupuncture on Day 4 and about 3 times since. I got great results from it. What I'm feeling now is mainly anxiety and the occasional brain shivers, but mostly anxiety. The acupuncture made a noticeable, positive difference in how I felt. I had great days following the treatments. I'd do it everyday but it's $75 everytime I walk in the office so I have to limit my visits.
I think it's worth the try. The World Health Organization approves acupuncture for anxiety and digestion disorders (among other things), according to an article I read in the office.
Good luck to you and know everybody on this board is pulling for you.
Amanda

Amanda,
Thanks for your imput. I am going tonight for my 2nd appt and am asking for some relief with my TMJ as well. I'll let you know how it goes. The first appt was good but I didn't feel as good as I hoped. Maybe a few is what I need.
Eileen
