Lexapro Taper

Posted by KathrynLex on April 5, 2005, at 23:08:14

I'm tapering off Lexapro - from 20 mgs to 10 mgs and feel a little bit out of it after 4 days at 10 mgs. Is there anyone here who has done it this way who can tell me what to expect in a couple of weeks? Thanks!

K.

Reducing Lexapro from 20mg to 10mg represents a 50% decrease. That is quite a bit. You might have been more comfortable at 15mg for awhile before moving to 10mg. I guess that's common sense.

My guess is that even at 10mg, things should get better within the next few days. To discontinue Lexapro entirely, you might want to try some of the things you'll find on this Psycho-Babble Withdrawal board. You will find a few different methods of mitigating or avoiding the discontinuation withdrawal syndrome.

Don't hesitate to ask more question if you don't find what you are looking for.

After several unsuccessful attempts to get off of Lexapro, I followed what someone on the board suggested a while back...I had the doctor switch me over to LIQUID Lexapro when I got down to 5mgm/day. (Just getting there took three months!)
I decreased in milligrams using a syringe to measure, over a six week period -- never decreasing more that an ml at a time/week and staying on the same dose for a week to ten days.
It felt like FOREVER, but then I would remember the withdrawal that I went through on previous attempts and that helped me to be patient.
Remember, it can take up to six too eight weeks for withdrawal symptoms to appear. GH

Hi Kathryn - It's been months since I've read or posted, but I decided last night to try getting off the Lex and seeing how I do, so I looked to the withdrawal board for ideas and saw your post! I think we started on the Lex around the same time so it's interesting we're going off of it around the same time too! Your post was over a week ago. How are you feeling now?

Last summer I went from 20mg gently down to 5mg, which is where I am now. It took me about 5 weeks. I went every other day 20 then 10 for a couple of weeks, then back and forth between 10 & 5. It worked and I didn't really feel much - some headaches, a bit of nausea now & then. Once I went down to 5mg, I stuck there for a month or 2. I was still soooo sleepy, even on the 5mg, so my doctor gave me a scrip for Wellbutrin. That was in October. I'm still really sleepy all the time, even with the WB, so I am going to try to go off of the Lex completely to see if that's really what's making me so fatigued.

I'm very curious to hear how you're doing!
