What is the considered a Substance Abuse

Posted by rjlockhart on February 25, 2006, at 14:26:13

I just got off dexamphetamine. Its been rough, my mother took me off it because she though that i was dependent on it.

Ok I went to a hostpital, and they called my psychiatrist about this issue, i had no contact with my psychiatrist about this.

Dextrostat helped me focus and attentive. But now what is going to happen? what is my doctor going to say. I am going to flat out tell him what happened. and i am not dependent on it.

Does anyone know?

Matt

Dependency is not addiction. There is nothing necessarily adverse about drug dependency. I am dependent on pain killers to have any kind of a life at all.

If dextrostat helped you with focus and attention, then why did you stop taking it? It was doing exactly what it was meant to do, and dependency has nothing to do with it.

Hey, just out of curiousity, do you still get those nightly paranoia/manic/anxiety attack episodes? It had occured to me that stimulant WITHDRAWAL might cause a dissociative state that you used to have...

Do you feel better now that you don't take dex? Any noticable changes?

Also, I agree with Larry's post.

Like Larry said, there is a difference between addiction and dependence. A BIG difference. As human beings we are dependent on air to breath, water to stay hydrated, and food for energy. Dependence is not a failing, its part of being human. If you're missing a necessary chemical, and replacing this chemical corrects some pretty big problems, why isn't it okay to take it? If you had a headache would you not take an aspirin? Does that mean you're dependent on aspirin if you take some every time you have a headache? I know its hard to defy your mother, but you have to do what's right for you. If your mother was against your taking medicine that would save your life, would you go along with it and let yourself die? In the end its up to you to take care of you.

And now I'll stop preaching on THIS subject.

Take care Matt. You are an incredible person. You deserve the best out of life.

I looked up dexamphetamine on the internet and read that it is a possibly habit forming medication. So I may have been a little rash about your mom on this one. I guess I'm so used to getting all indignant about people mouthing off about meds when they don't have the faintest idea what they're talking about, that I jumped to conclusions. I still believe everything I said about dependence, but I see now your mom may have at least had a legitimate reason to question that med.

But Xanax is habit forming too. Is she okay with it because its a take as needed rather than everyday thing? All I can say is to take your doctor's advice into consideration as well as you mom's. And if you have to, get a second opinion, and even a third. This will help you decide what action to take, and might make your mom feel better.
