Why am i smoking to fight depression

Posted by rjlockhart on February 25, 2006, at 14:21:01

I am not a person that smokes regularly but when i get into these really pits, i feel ciggarette after cigarette and it just for the moment makes it go away.

I cant keep doing this, i feel bad. I am a ok looking guy, but i dont want this smoking to destroy me, and my whole image.

I have been off dexamphetamine for a while, and its been bad since. Smoking increased. I started having pits. My mother took me off this, i dont want to feel im trapped.

What do i do?

IMO and I don't like smoking but, I would not worry too much about the smoking... Id worry more about you. the more anxious you are, the more you will smoke. Work on you, the smoking will happen in time. Have you been to the docotr by yourself yet?

Smoking is a stimulant and though it is mild and it doesn't last long it may just be substituting for some of what the Dex did. I am not sure how long you have been off of dex but in reality you can *feel* and really be depressed for a few months after stopping use. Antidepressants such as Wellbutrin or Effexor might just kick the blues and especially wellbutrin will help stop the smoking. Good luck, and don't stress it as it will get better with time.

Regards,

Matt

Smoking hits dopamine receptors. Better than crack.

Smokers also have about a 40% lower MAO level than non smokers. Natural anti depressant maybe? When I worked at the local psychiatric hospital, I always wondered why just about all the patients chain smoked.

I've also heard that smoking is good for schizophenics something about the dopamine that is absent in their brains. Fondly, Phillipa

Matt post the link to your website but I think I've seen it. Is it the one with the pics of your friends and family and you with the sunburn? And no Matt I'm not trying to scare you. You already know you are not schizophrenic. Love Mom 2 Jan

How are you finding the Xanax compared with Klonopin?

Hey Matt. Quitting smoking was the hardest thing I ever had to do (1 1/2 years now). I could still start right back up in a heartbeat if I let myself. Smoking is PLEASURABLE! I still occasionally bum a cig when out drinking, which isn't great, but its better than being the hardcore smoker I was.

I know this probably doesn't mean much - I ignored all warnings from people when I was young - but every day you smoke makes it harder to quit. If you were to quit now while its relatively new to you, it would be unimaginably easier than trying to later later like I did.

I also firmly believe that some people are more inclined to be hopelessly addicted to cigs than others. And people with anxiety like us fall into that category.

Not only is smoking bad for you, but the smell that stays with you isn't too pleasant to non-smokers. And after a while you get discusted with the smell yourself, as well as the taste in your mouth. But guess what, by that time you're addicted! Cigarettes become the enemy! You begin to hate smoking worse than anything else in the world, but you just can't stop! You beat yourself up for being too weak to quit doing something you HATE SO MUCH!!!

All I can do is let you know about my experience. The rest is up to you. And that's the end of my preaching on this subject.
