Hitting the bottle...of cough surup

Posted by Medric on February 24, 2006, at 3:08:04

I started taking DXM (cough surup) in high doses for the high about a year ago, and i can't stop. I do it about two or three times a month, but i've just recently realized i'm not able to stop. I've tried replacing it with weed, but it just makes me crave it more. To top it off, i find myself needing higher and higher doses to reach the same effect. Anyone have any advise on what to do? Not really in the mood to see any doctors or such...

I got no good advice, but I'm quitting just about everything cold turkey right now, so maybe you could try that and see which one of us if f*cked up again first. Marijuana is a piss poor substitute for anything in my experience. Any other advice I could offer is probably counter-productive. But I think that stuff is dangerous so find out about long term consequence info and maybe scare yourself some. (that only works for some mindsets, who know?)

I'm really concerned. The idea that you are still increasing the dose to maintain the effect (the high, from what I gather) is worrisome. The nature of the drug itself is to have an anaesthetic threshold, and going unconscious could be a threat to your life.

It is certainly possible to become addicted to DXM, and you show those hallmarks. I urge you to consider consulting detoxification centres. There may be special supports required for DXM detox (I really don't know).

I think there is a significant risk of permanent neurological injury if you continue.

I believe there's also a possible syndrome called NMDA antagonist toxicity that you might want to investigate... that might scare you into stopping using DXM. Im not sure if the info is true or accurate, but it certainly makes me not want to use DXM.

I can recall going through a "cough syrup" phase
a while back, but it was always a syrup with some form of Codiene,Hydrocodone, some Opiate-Based stuff. Am I mistaking "DXM" syrup to be Dextromathorphan,or is that what it actually is?

DXM is indeed DeXtroMethorphan.

Most users are careful to not co-ingest guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine, which are often components of cough syrups, alongside the DXM, but some don't even do that much.

I'm fine now, thank you for the support. I managed to stop the addiction (with the help of mushrooms). Now i'm doing fine, I say stay away from the pharms.
